Eligibility

Due to the unique nature of our work environment, all staff are required to satisfy a number of additional requirements that are not usually part of a typical workplace selection process.

These mandatory prerequisites are:

  • all ASIS staff must be Australian citizens;
  • all ASIS staff are required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Positive Vet security clearance. This involves the checking of an applicant's background, identity, personality, financial circumstances and other related matters;
  • all ASIS staff must undergo psychological assessments to determine their suitability to work in a high-security environment;
  • Intelligence Officers and deployable Operations Officers must have a current Australian driver's licence; and
  • all ASIS staff must be willing to relocate to Canberra (although in some cases this may not be necessary).

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, we demand the highest levels of dedication, integrity and professionalism in all our people. Our recruitment process is therefore necessarily more intrusive than you would encounter in most other employment applications.

Prior to submitting your application, you need to consider your own preparedness for questions that will cover, for example, your current and past personal relationships and living circumstances, personal values, financial situation, physical and mental health history (including substance use and abuse), and civil record. It is in your own interest to be honest and accurate in disclosing details about yourself.

If you feel uncomfortable about having to disclose such information, please think carefully before applying.

Your application and the detail that you subsequently provide will be handled in the strictest confidence. Psychological testing and assessment is conducted by registered psychologists in accordance with the ethical standards of the Australian Psychological Society.

Having joined ASIS, you will work in an organisation that has a policy of zero tolerance regarding the use of prohibited substances. We have a drug testing program which includes the testing of both prospective and current staff members.

All applications for employment with ASIS are handled in the strictest confidence. It is essential that you maintain a similar level of confidentiality and that you not discuss your application with others.
