Employment FAQ Page 1

What do Intelligence Officers actually do?

They help to obtain, in accordance with the Government's requirements, intelligence about the capabilities, intentions or activities of people or organisations outside Australia. To achieve ASIS's functions, Intelligence Officers are expected to have excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills. They are certainly not tied to their desks, and they need to be energetic, flexible and have very good judgement.

Are there travel opportunities for ASIS staff?

Providing you successfully pass the required training, Intelligence Officers, Deployable Operations Officers and Operations Technical Officers will be eligible to apply for work overseas. The majority of ASIS officers have the opportunity to travel, domestically or internationally, during their careers with the Service.

What is the career path like?

We can offer long-term career opportunities for the right person. Employment and promotion decisions in ASIS are based on merit.

With whom can I discuss my interest in working with ASIS?

At this stage, you should not discuss your application with anyone, even family and friends. This may seem overly cautious or unreasonable, however, there are important reasons why this is the case, which will become clear when you meet with an ASIS officer. If you have questions or concerns, we can assist with further advice, by calling the relevant enquiries number.
