Operations Officer Overview

There are a wide range of challenging and interesting opportunities as an Operations Officer in ASIS. Most of our Operations Officers are based in Canberra, researching and analysing particular intelligence priorities, and collating, validating and reporting valuable secret intelligence to our customers in Government and our partners in the intelligence community. But there are also an increasing number of opportunities for Operations Officers to be posted overseas.

As an Operations Officer, you will have the opportunity to focus on particular geographic areas, such as North or South-East Asia, the Middle East or the Pacific. Alternatively, you may focus on a particular global issue such as counter-terrorism or weapons proliferation.

The role of an ASIS Operations Officer may include:

  • liaison with ASIS’s allied and regional intelligence and security partners;
  • liaison with Commonwealth and/or state government departments and agencies;
  • provision of operational advice and assistance to ASIS staff overseas; and
  • delivery and development of training and briefings to internal and external stakeholders.

Regardless of your precise role, you will have the opportunity to apply your research and analytical skills, your particular language, scientific or technical abilities, and/or your knowledge of particular geographic areas or global issues.

If you deploy overseas as an Operations Officer, you will support secret intelligence operations and collection activities. To do so, you will be required to apply for, and successfully complete, a rigorous training course.

To be successful as an Operations Officer, you will need to demonstrate:

  • strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • excellent analytical skills, with the ability to spot trends among a range of data, and an ability to look at the big picture while also ensuring accuracy in the detail of your analysis;
  • resourcefulness, with an innate sense of curiosity;
  • self-motivation, with exemplary judgment because sometimes you will be required to make decisions without all the relevant information;
  • resilience and resourcefulness, because you will sometimes find yourself in difficult and challenging situations; and
  • the highest levels of personal integrity and professionalism.
