What is an ASIS Technologist?

In ASIS, the term 'Technologist' refers to those staff who have technical qualifications (across a range of disciplines) and apply these technical skills and expertise to advance the ASIS foreign intelligence collection mission. ASIS technologists may work to support ASIS's corporate technology functions, or in support of the conduct of ASIS operations overseas. This may include direct involvement in operational activity.

In both cases ASIS technologists play a critical role in ASIS's foreign intelligence collection mission, whether this be from within Australia or overseas. ASIS technologists are experts at finding technical solutions to the most complex of problems by researching, developing and deploying new solutions or adapting existing technology to suit ASIS requirements. ASIS technologists pair exceptional professional and interpersonal skills with their drive to protect Australia and its national interests.

There are two core functional groups for ASIS technologists:

Corporate Technology Officers: work with leading edge technology to deliver innovative, reliable, flexible and collaborative business solutions in an international environment. ASIS corporate technology officers utilise specialise roles including, but not limited to; business analysts, project managers, infrastructure and network architects, software developers, data scientists, IT security specialists, IT support and client engagement with a focus on provision of high quality solutions for the ASIS business. All roles are based in Australia.

Operational Technology Officers: enable ASIS to collect foreign intelligence through the design, development and application of innovative technical solutions to address current and emerging operational challenges. We have a team of committed and creative officers from a diverse range of engineering, technical and scientific backgrounds who are responsible for developing, managing and deploying unique technical collection capabilities. Being one of ASIS's key operational streams, Operational Technology Officers must possess strong interpersonal and, ideally, cross-cultural skills. Operational Technology Officers perform these roles both from within Australia and overseas.
