ASIS provides graduates with tailored on-the-job experiences, training and support in one of the most unique, dynamic and fast-paced workplaces in Australia. Over the course of our 12-month program, you will learn how intelligence is gathered, reported and actioned, and how your expertise and commitment are critical to ASIS's ongoing evolution and success.
Unlike virtually any other work environment, your skills – whether they be in law, tech, mathematics, accounting, international relations or countless other disciplines – will be applied in incredible ways that genuinely advance Australia's national interest. Our graduate program is a rare opportunity to kick start your career in intelligence.
ASIS offers four graduate streams:
Applications for the 2026 ACTIVATE graduate program have now closed.
You’ll complete a rotational program to help you learn about different parts of the organisation that will give you a strong understanding of the business of intelligence. The types of rotations and training and development opportunities you complete will depend on which graduate stream you choose.
ASIS offers the following graduate streams:
Operational analyst stream
If you like creative thinking, solving complex problems and ‘joining the dots’, the ASIS operational analyst graduate stream could be for you. Your first task will be completing an in-house training course to learn foundational skills and analysis concepts. You’ll also learn more about the National Intelligence Community and how agencies work together to achieve common goals.
You will be placed in an operational team directly supporting intelligence operations. Your team may be geographic or thematic and you will be expected to develop knowledge about the region or topic, while improving your analysis skills. Every day will bring new issues to resolve and new information to learn. You will use your knowledge, skills and all data available to make considered, evidence-based decisions and recommend actions with real world impact.
Our operational analysts are drawn from a range of backgrounds, and we seek officers who demonstrate aptitude and suitability for generating creative solutions to complex problems. We’re looking for people who have completed degrees including, but not limited to: arts, law, international relations or politics, and who can apply theories and guidelines, synthesise large amounts of information and are comfortable using new technologies.
As a graduate in the technologist stream you’ll undertake multiple workplace rotations that expose you to a range of technical activities that purposefully build your corporate cultural knowledge, and develop and extend your skills and tech competencies. You’ll work with both operational technology and enterprise teams to innovate and develop new solutions to complex problems that enable the collection of foreign intelligence. On successful completion of the graduate program you will be placed in a technical team which matches your skills and interests.
We are looking for those with degrees in fields including, but not limited to: IT computer science, software development, data (analytics, management, science), engineering (hardware, software, communications, RF, mechatronics, mechanical, and electronic), networks, cloud, cyber, client engagement and more.
Finance professionals at ASIS contribute to real-world outcomes. As a finance graduate you’ll be afforded access to unique challenges and gain hands-on experience while being supported as you apply and build your skills.
You’ll be exposed to a range of functions including financial advice and support, accounting, divisional resource management and departmental finance.
Learning opportunities for graduates are plentiful. You’ll gain insight into our dynamic business, learn how we achieve short-term targets while delivering sustainable long-term goals, and you’ll experience and contribute to our annual planning processes.
ASIS is committed to continuous professional development. You will have access to study assistance for the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and the Certified Practising Accountants Australia accreditation programs, as well as other applicable studies. We help our people maintain membership with professional bodies and associations relevant to their roles.
We’re looking for those with tertiary qualifications in areas including, but not limited to: accounting (financial and management), taxation, banking and finance, financial planning and other related degrees.
As the world, and Australia’s place within it, becomes more complex, there has never been a better time to be a legal or paralegal graduate at ASIS.
Legal graduate
As an ASIS legal graduate, you will have an opportunity to work across all areas of ASIS’s legal practice, including operations, legislation and litigation and corporate matters. You’ll undertake context-rich learning, receive vocational coaching and mentoring from highly experienced national security lawyers. You will also be exposed to legal matters across the National Intelligence Community and work closely with other intelligence agencies and Commonwealth entities.
Attention to detail and well-developed communication skills will be of advantage in the program, while those who are keen to learn and to work collaboratively will thrive in this unique legal environment.
Eligible candidates must have recognised tertiary qualifications (Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor).
Paralegal graduate
As an ASIS paralegal graduate, you will have an opportunity to support critical work across all areas of ASIS’s legal practice. You’ll receive vocational on-the-job training and mentoring from highly experienced support staff, and work with leading national security lawyers on highly complex matters. You will also be exposed to a range of high-profile legal matters across the National Intelligence Community, and work closely with support staff in other intelligence agencies and Commonwealth entities.
Attention to detail and well-developed communication skills will be of advantage in the program, while those who are keen to learn and to work collaboratively in support of ASIS’s legal practice will thrive in this unique legal environment.
While legal training is not a prerequisite for an ASIS paralegal graduate, previous exposure to legal matters through tertiary studies, or experience as a paralegal in a legal practice will be highly regarded. A tertiary qualification remains a core requirement however.
We are looking for creative, energetic and ambitious people who are motivated to further Australia’s national interest by working in a unique and highly specialised intelligence agency.
We value problem solving, critical thinking and innovation. Whether you’re studying law, tech, mathematics, engineering, arts or accounting, ASIS is looking for graduate applicants with diverse skillsets from a range of academic backgrounds.

Should you be accepted into one of our graduate pathways you'll rotate across different roles within that pathway, each introducing you to a different area of ASIS, and each a critical part of a close-knit team of intelligence professionals. You’ll engage in a tailored development program which includes a mentor and be exposed to events and activities that upskill you and your capacity to contribute.
