I used to work in the private sector on an IT service desk. I wasn’t sure whether my background would be enough, but found that my ability to troubleshoot a problem, assess risk and talk to people made me a perfect fit. Conducting technical operations in the field as an OTO is exciting as every TechOp is different – there’s always new information to something that you’re working on, which can reshape, change or improve the work you’re doing.

I love coming up with pretty creative ways to blend in while conducting operations – whether in a team, working alone, supporting others in the field or from HQ. I also love being able to post overseas with my family, giving them an experience of living abroad and sending my kids to great schools. And the biggest win is that once I go home, I don’t have any work emails to check or phone calls to take – I can go home and concentrate on my family.

In ASIS, every day is different, every problem is unique, and every one of my past experiences have some part to play in my role here. Everything from the technical aspects of engineering, to the artistic side of design work, right down to the people skills from working in the film industry. And unlike the private industry, where you’re pigeonholed into a role – I get to experience the full scope of a project from early concepts to final manufacturing and installation.
- Operational technology officer
As an OTO, we function in an environment where we’re constantly challenged with diverse problems to be solved. Whereas in the private sector, the same challenges must be overcome for a single industry – here in ASIS, we’re like chameleons across multiple industries, disciplines and manufacturing methodologies, looking to provide the best outcome.
- Operational technology officer
How often do you find yourself thinking of new ways to use existing and emerging technologies to solve all sorts of problems? Do you like building tech as much as reverse engineering it to see how things work?
Operational technology officers (OTOs) do all this and more. And while the work can be challenging, it’s also highly rewarding.
