Technical officer

Technical officers find, develop and adapt systems and technologies to keep ASIS at the cutting-edge.

From full-stack solutions to capacity consumption and planning – our technical officers are the ones that keep ASIS running now and into the future.

It’s a cliché, but I find that not every day is the same. I’m having to find solutions to problems that just don’t exist with IT jobs elsewhere, and that can be really exciting. I’m able to address technical issues and resolve them for users (no matter where they are), effectively and clearly. While I enjoyed my time in private industry, being able to directly support other officers and the mission in my role makes this so much more rewarding.

- Manager – A/V infrastructure

ASIS is the most welcoming organisation I have worked at. It truly values industry expertise – I have had ample opportunities to share my knowledge and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. As a technical officer, I am able to collaborate with national and partner agencies to ensure we stay ahead of evolving threats. And knowing that I am making a contribution to our nation’s security is unparalleled.

- Technical officer – Project management

In ASIS, if you’re agile and comfortable with shifting priorities, you’ll experience a broad scale of work that can be demanding but also exciting. What surprised me most, even in the technical space, is how important the human elements of the business are to drive success. You need to be able to foster relationships, think strategically and understand the mission.

- Technical officer – Software dev

There is nothing like on-the-job training. Don’t be afraid to apply, and understand that ASIS has some unique capabilities and programs which you can’t prepare for outside of the organisation (particularly when coming straight from uni). So long as you have a sound understanding of your chosen technical discipline, we can provide the training required to give you those additional skills to make you an effective officer.

- Manager – Partnerships

ROLE BREAKDOWN

Are you across current tools, techniques and technologies? Do you enjoy debugging, designing and diving into the full development system life-cycle? Have you felt stagnant in your current tech job?

Technical officer roles in ASIS leverage your muscle memory and experience in traditional tech settings, and expose you to new challenges, systems and pathways unique to a secret intelligence service.

Most technical officer roles are based out of our Canberra headquarters in traditional office environments. Some roles may include domestic and overseas travel, and may include posting opportunities.
