During my program, someone told me that “ASIS is your oyster”, and it truly was the best piece of advice I received. There are so many broad and wide-ranging opportunities available that ensures you are never stagnant. It will open your eyes to a whole other world. And best of all – your work as a grad will be important, satisfying and of service to the entire Australian community.

Coming into the program as a recent uni grad, I was worried that I’d get pigeonholed into one particular area. Fortunately, because the program involved rotations through vastly different teams, I was able to experience the full gamut of roles and operational focuses. It helped me figure out where I wanted to land post-program, but it’s also opened my eyes to other teams I could move into down the track.

Kick off the operations analyst development program by completing an in-house training course to learn foundational skills and intelligence analysis concepts. You’ll also learn more about the National Intelligence Community and how ASIS fits in.
Upon completion of the training course, you’ll be placed in an operational team directly supporting intelligence operations. Your team may be geographic or thematic, and you’ll be expected to develop knowledge about your region or theme of focus, while improving your analytical skills.
Every day you’ll need to use your knowledge, skills and the data available to make considered, evidence-based decisions and recommendations to shape intelligence work.
You don’t need to be an international affairs expert to succeed in this stream. Whilst prior knowledge and experience with geopolitical issues or foreign languages may be beneficial, the skills at the heart of the analyst role are more common than you might realise.
Analysts should be agile and able to adapt to high-tempo periods of work.
They must also be effective communicators – dissecting and distilling key information into clear, accurate and impactful advice across written and verbal mediums.
And above all – analysts must be curious – willing to ask questions and think critically about problems, and pursue leads to attempt to answer those questions.
Applicants must have Australian citizenship and have a checkable background. We cannot progress your application if you are awaiting citizenship.
